A second simultaneous live Twitch stream on the MCDM2 channel featured live video from tripod mounted cameras for close-ups combat encounters. Cameras on an overhead rig captured live views of the dungeon master and players and table. The show aired a selection of fan art, then a brief intro to the session (typically a recap), the animated intro to the show, and 3 to 4 hours of live D&D with an intermission. It makes sense, his channel has always been popular because of his passion for the history of RPGs, not just the current popularity of 5e.For its first 28 episodes, The Chain was formatted as a typical live Twitch streamed D&D game. So, he's just using the opportunity to finally conquer one of his personal white whales of gaming. I think Matt wanted a goal to have just in case the kickstarter performs beyond any expectations, but he didn't want to use a "real" goal that would affect the product in any way. The 2 million goal is just completely bizarre. The "real" funding goal is 1 million, that's what will allow them to make all the content they're planning to make. Because, seriously, that 800k "stretch goal" is all but guaranteed and they have no reason to assume this book will perform worse than K&W at 1.3 mil. I think MCDM is basically kickstarting a bundle of 2 books, but they're hedging their bets and will just release it as 1 book if this kickstarter flops for some reason. (I'm not sure exactly how they'll divide up all the content between the physical books themselves, but conceptually that's how I see it.) Think of it as $50 for the main book and another $20 for a separate book (or maybe booklet?) with all the stretch goals. It s still really high, but this is a premium product and it's basically two books. And that's why I think that $70 hardcopy price point will not be.

So, since we can assume that it will hit every goal (except maybe the 2mil) i'm pretty confident that this is going to be 2 books- one full of monsters and one full of bosses, lairs, and loot. This is actually quite a bit of extra content, so it may be this turns into its own separate book you get along with your new monster book

If we hit $1M, every Action-Oriented monster (at least 20) in this book gets their own lair, complete with maps and encounters, and a unique treasure hoard! Kill a boss monster, get some dope LOOT! I think that the price point is there because MCDM is very confident they'll hit 1million, and that's when the lairs kick in. I'm pointing this out because I see a lot of comments concerned about the price.

Literally every DM could use something like this in their games, so I think it will get much more funding from the wider D&D community.

This is a monster manual full of goblins and skeletons. The price is high, but MCDM hit 1 mil for their other books and those were niche products, those were backers who were on board just because it was more content from Matt. IMO it will definitely hit the lair book at 1 million before the kickstart ends. The 800k goal for rival parties will be easy, they'll probably hit that by the end of the day. That is a premium product, for better and for worse.Īt the time of writing, the video has been up for an hour and the project is already halfway funded.
